The well developed German book industry with a huge interest for books from foreign countries, especially fiction has still not been accessed by the publishers of South Asia.
India is the only country which was the Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair twice, once in 1986 and then 20 years later in 2006. Though Indian authors of international fame are very well known in Germany, a large body of works still is not made accessible to the German readers. Limited access to translation funding as well as the lack of a sustained initiative have been responsible for that. The German Book Office would be looking at filling this gap.
